2 Aug: Uffizi Gallery

We had a light breakfast at the hotel and headed out.

Everything in Florence is relatively near so everywhere we also go by foot.

We visited Uffizi Gallery and had to queue for the tickets even though we booked them, paying extra in the process. Thanks lor.

The Uffizi Gallery houses a lot of famous artwork. And by famous means those which I have seen/heard of prior to this visit. These include Adoration of the Magi(Leonardo) , Annunciation (Leonardo), The Birth of Venus (Botticelli), Primavera(Botticelli) and Doni Tondo (Michelangelo).

I love Botticelli's works. The Annunciation is interesting as it showed Leonardo's (turtle with the sword) artistic genius. The painting, especially the hand and the wall behind it, is grossly outta proportion when viewed from the front. We expect better from a grandmaster right? But when viewed at an angle from the right side, everything is in proportion. This is because the painting was meant to be hung at a corner and people would normally see it from the right hand side, at an angle.

View from the gallery.

Next we went to Ponte Vecchio. 'Ponte' means 'bridge'. It is this huge bridge lined with jewellery shops, none which I can afford. So I don't have much to do there.

Shuyi with the goldsmith.

I'm on another bridge. Ponte Vecchio is the one behind. There are about 5 of these bridges in Florence but Ponte Vecchio is the only one with shops on it.

Here we are, on Ponte Vecchio.

Dinner was at this small hole-in-the-wall restaurant near one of the main piazza. It is run by an elderly couple and their son. It boasts of home cooked food straight from mama's kitchen.

They have this thing with Madonna: the resturant has pictures of her pasted here and there and her album is being looped on the player. That is veal and spinnich and breaded tomato soup (looks like you eat tomato soup and then puke).
